Travel Backpacks That Fit Under the Seat

The under-seat bag is the only luggage allowance included on every fare, in every cabin, on every airline. It is also the allowance airlines enforce hardest at the gate, because an under-seat bag that doesn’t fit blocks a footwell. The packs that never get gate-checked are bought against a specific airline box, not against the words “personal item” on a product page.

Four boxes worth memorising

Airline boxes are not the same box, and the differences decide your pack. Ryanair includes one small bag on every fare, listed at 40 x 20 x 25 cm, which must fit under the seat in front of you. easyJet’s small under-seat bag is 45 x 36 x 20 cm including handles and wheels. United publishes 17 x 10 x 9 inches — 43 x 25 x 22 cm — for personal items. Delta publishes no personal-item dimensions at all; its guidance is simply that a small backpack must fit beneath the seat in front of you.

The working range that clears all four is roughly 40 to 43 cm tall and no deeper than about 22 cm. easyJet’s box is the roomiest published one, and Ryanair’s is the shortest. If your itinerary mixes carriers, size to the smallest number on the ticket, because the sizer at the gate belongs to the strictest airline, not the average one.

Published dimensions, then compression

A brand that lists dimensions in centimetres is doing you a favour; treat a listing that only says “airline approved” as unfinished. Measure height including any handle or top pocket that adds structure, then compare against the strictest box on your itinerary. Soft packs compress, and depth is the dimension that gives — a 14 cm-deep pack can lose a few centimetres when it isn’t full, while a structured top pocket cannot shrink. Weight is rarely the binding constraint for a backpack, though easyJet does cap its small bag at 15 kg, per the airline’s cabin bag page.

What the picks are picked for

The Bellroy Classic Backpack is listed at 20 litres and 43 x 35 x 15 cm, with a padded sleeve for a 16-inch laptop and a 6-year warranty. Those dimensions sit inside easyJet’s 45 x 36 x 20 cm box with margin, and the whole pack weighs 700 grams. The trade-off: 43 cm of height will not pass Ryanair’s 40 cm box on paper.

The Tom Bihn Synapse 19 is the strict-limits pick. Tom Bihn documents 11.4 x 16 x 7.9 inches, 19 litres by the ASTM fill measure, and 755 grams in 630-denier ballistic nylon, and states the pack meets personal-item requirements for most major airlines. The trade-off: the laptop rides in a separate Cache sleeve inside the main cavity, not a dedicated padded pocket.

The Aer City Pack 2 has the best protection layout of the three — Aer documents a padded, suspended laptop pocket with soft lining, for laptops up to 16 inches, in 16 litres at 46 x 30 x 14 cm. The trade-off is honest to state: 46 cm of height exceeds several published personal-item boxes. The 14 cm depth compresses, but a strict sizer can still flag it.
